School History
South Providence School started as a small alternative high school program in the spring of 1994, A.C.E. Alternative Center for Education. The following school year, a middle school program was added. In 1997, the name was changed to South Providence School.
Our building has served the community of Waxhaw and greater Union County for several decades. The original Waxhaw School was built in 1922 but was destroyed by fire in 1941, with the gymnasium left as the only remaining building at the time. The current building was built shortly thereafter and housed Waxhaw High School until 1960. In 1960, the building became Waxhaw Elementary and served Kindergarten through fifth grade students until the completion of a new Waxhaw Elementary School in 1992.
